The Rose has Thorns.
Dark curly hair cascading softly
brown spaniel eyes sparkling.
I will never forget your beauty
or the clean smell of cotton
from your clothes.
Never forget your low tone of voice
or those long graceful fingers
tightly gripping the gleaming sharp knife
as you mugged me that evening
long ago.

Another poem inspired by my two top sources of inspiration - a Writers Digest Poetic Asides poetry prompt "pick a plant (any plant), make that the title of your poem, and write a poem." from Robert Lee Brewer and a news item in the Daily Mail - about two young women who while attempting to mug a 23 year old mother punched her toddler aged 2 in the head. The young women's images were captured on cctv and I was struck by how pretty and unthreatening they looked. Something that seemed to me far more sinister than had they looked obviously criminal.
I wondered how they would be remembered in years to come and the emotional damage that had been caused to a 2 year old and mother who now have the awful realisation that danger can come from anywhere without warning?
